Overstock.com

Project Overview

As the swag overseer on the Overstock Branding team, my role was to ensure that all branded merchandise not only reflected our company’s identity but also caught attention with eye-catching, unique designs. We focused on creating memorable items that maintained a consistent visual appeal, using Overstock’s signature red, black, and white color palette.

The Challenge

Swag is a powerful tool for brand recognition and employee engagement. The challenge was to design promotional items that would stand out and reinforce Overstock’s bold and dynamic identity. Our goal was to consistently create fresh swag designs while staying true to the established brand aesthetic and ensuring each item effectively represented the company’s core values.

My Role

I served as the primary designer overseeing all swag production. This involved:

Design Creation: I created a wide range of new swag items, from apparel to accessories, ensuring each design maintained strong brand recognition.
Brand Consistency: Managed the application of Overstock’s signature red, black, and white brand colors across all items.
Look Book Creation: I regularly produced new items and included them in the company’s swag look books, which helped maintain a fresh and engaging visual catalog for internal use and employee distribution.

Approach & Solution

1. Bold, Colorful Designs

  • Goal: Create swag that not only stood out but also had immediate brand recognition.
  • Solution: I leveraged Overstock’s primary brand colors—red, black, and white—to create visually striking and memorable designs. This approach ensured that all swag items had a uniform yet eye-catching appearance that immediately communicated the Overstock brand identity.
  • Outcome: Whether it was t-shirts, hats, or tote bags, the use of bold colors helped create merchandise that employees and customers alike would recognize and enjoy.

2. Fresh, Unique Items

  • Goal: Regularly update the swag catalog with new and interesting designs that felt current and engaging.
  • Solution: I worked on developing both classic and new swag items, incorporating unique design elements to keep things fresh while maintaining brand consistency. Items ranged from stylish apparel to everyday office accessories, all of which helped create a sense of pride and unity among Overstock employees.
  • Outcome: Each new swag collection maintained a sense of excitement, with designs that felt modern, fun, and representative of Overstock’s forward-thinking culture.

3. Swag Look Book

  • Goal: Provide a visually appealing, easy-to-navigate lookbook for the company, showcasing all available swag options.
  • Solution: I created a lookbook that featured a comprehensive selection of available swag, organized by category, and ensured that each design was aligned with Overstock’s branding guidelines. This catalog became a key resource for internal teams to select swag that reinforced the brand’s identity.
  • Outcome: The lookbook was well-received internally, helping streamline the swag ordering process and reinforcing Overstock’s commitment to high-quality, consistent brand messaging.

Results & Impact

Strong Brand Recognition: The consistent use of Overstock’s core brand colors and unique designs ensured that all swag items were instantly recognizable and aligned with our visual identity.
Employee Engagement: Engaging, high-quality swag designs helped foster a sense of belonging and pride among employees.
Increased Brand Visibility: The swag items were widely used and shared, enhancing Overstock’s visibility at events, trade shows, and through employee wear.
Fresh, Trendy Appeal: Regular updates to the swag lookbook kept things fresh and exciting, ensuring Overstock stayed ahead of trends while reinforcing its brand values.
